Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was an only child. Scott studied at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had at two different jobs while studying secondary education. The hope was to become an English secondary school teacher. This dream was however ended when, after three years of study and being an assistant to teachers she dropped out of university. She began her career by singing live poetry and performing her own work. Then she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson, a part of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. The singer was at the Roots performance. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Also, she was performers during the Canada touring of Broadway musical Rent. She was also the very first signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
